Loving Well

Glynnis Whitwer

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.”
1 Corinthians 13:1 (NIV)

Was I overly sensitive? Or was he simply being rude? For months I struggled with these questions, and repeatedly gave him the benefit of the doubt. He was busy, I thought. Or pre-occupied.

His ability to perform the job wasn’t in question. His talent and gifting at his craft were obvious. Yet in pursuit of the goal of excellence, people were collateral. Maybe not everybody, but I was.

It didn’t take long for God to place a mirror between us. Instead of him, I saw my own reflected tendency to do the same. In fact, years ago God pulled me out of ministry for a time to address my love of the job over love of people. I was definitely like Linus in the Peanuts® comic strip when he declared, “I love humanity, it’s people I can’t stand.”

Interestingly, that attitude is not an option for a follower of Jesus. More than being a recommendation on how to act, loving others defines us. How we love others makes us who we are. Without love, we are an empty, but beautifully wrapped package.

I learned this lesson during a season of leadership in children’s ministry. I loved the children and work, but the volunteers got on my nerves. Resentment grew when they cancelled at the last moment for flimsy reasons, or came unprepared. Instead of cultivating a heart of love and compassion, I dismissed them mentally and continued working. No one ever knew … except God.

At the same time, God addressed my love for my family. In my devotion to serve Him, there were many times when my family paid the price with my snippy attitude or harried schedule. Reining me in, God used today’s key verse in First Corinthians 13 to teach me what mattered most to Him: “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.”

Was that how God saw my service? Was it a loud but empty offering? It seemed He was saying, Glynnis, I appreciate what you are doing, but I really want you to love those around you more than I want you to lead children’s ministry.

The lesson to love others was hard learned. Sadly, I still find myself slipping into project-over-people mentality. Because of my internal make-up it may always be a struggle. Yet God has truly changed me with this question: How am I loving others? It’s a question I try to ask myself every day, and often make adjustments in my attitude and behavior.

Being on the receiving end of a project-over-people situation was painful. Yet it was a good exercise to practice loving others. And thanks to the imaginary mirror God hung, I took a look at my current areas of responsibility. Apparently, I needed a refresher course in loving well.

Dear Lord, thank You for Your gracious and loving kindness toward me. I’m so thankful You see my potential, in spite of the times I choose to go my own way. Help me to set aside my need to accomplish a task, and choose to love others as You desire. Forgive my self-focus, even as I label it “service.” I long to be more than a clanging cymbal, I want to be a woman who loves well. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Teach Me Oh Lord

Teach Me Oh Lord :
Lyrics

Teach me oh Lord the ways of thy statues
And I shall keep them until the end
Just give me understanding and I will keep thy law
Hey, I shall observe them with my whole heart

Teach me Oh Lord
Teach me Oh Lord
Teach me Oh Lord
Ooooh Lord, Ooooooh Lord

Teach me master; teach me how to love
Teach me master; teach me how to pray
Teach me how to walk everyday

(I shall observe them with my whole heart)

Teach me Oh Lord
Teach me Oh Lord
Teach me Oh Lord
Oooh, Lord, oooh Lord

Teach me master; teach me how to love
Teach me master, I wanna know how to get down on my knees and pray
Teach me how to walk everyday
(I shall observe them with my whole heart)
Yes, I do
(I shall observe them with my whole heart)
Yeah, Lord,
(I shall observe them with my whole heart)
Yeah, yeah, yeah
(I shall observe them with my whole heart)

INTERLUDE

Teach me lord; teach me Lord, teach me, teach me Lord
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Glory, glory, glory, glory, glory, glory to the highest
Hey, I wanna learn
I wanna learn
All I want You to do is teach me, teach me Lord
I'm willing to learn, I'm willing to learn; I want to know Your blessed will
I wanna walk upright!

(Thanks to George for these lyrics)

My assistant forwarded me your email with the Acrostic you created. Thank you so much! This is very touching to my heart. I will have to have my daughter (who is a fan of Josh Groban’s) help me sing the words to that tune.

Again, thank you for your thoughtfulness!

An Invitation to be a Part of the P31 Woman Magazine

Proverbs 31 Ministries is dedicated to glorifying God by "Bringing God's peace, perspective, and purpose to today's busy woman." Through Jesus Christ, we shed light on God's distinct design for women and great responsibilities we have been given. With Proverbs 31:10-31 as a guide, we encourage and equip women to practice the Seven Principles of a Proverbs 31 woman.

We invite you to review our topic list and submit an article this year. Our primary guideline for accepting articles is that they are written from a Christian perspective and encourage and inspire women to live out their faith in the variety of arenas they may find themselves.

In addition to the topics listed, we encourage you to use the Seven Principles as a guide. We welcome items appropriate for the holidays and other seasonal topics such as back-to-school, summer vacation tips, etc. We also appreciate articles that address needs of women such as: single motherhood, raising an adopted child(ren), dealing with adolescence and teenagers, and taking care of parents, just to mention a few ideas.

Our mission is to glorify God in all we do and to encourage and inspire His beloved daughters. We pray you will be a part of this exciting and life-changing ministry.

Writer's Guidelines

We consider the production of each monthly magazine issue a ministry. Contributors are not paid, but they do retain the rights to their work. Additionally, we are pleased to send each contributor three copies of the issue featuring his or her article.

Proverbs 31 Ministries is always seeking articles that support our mission of encouraging and equipping women in the Seven Principles of the Proverbs 31 Woman.

Here are some things you can do to maximize the chances that your submissions will be printed:

Read the magazine to familiarize yourself with the kinds of articles we publish. (However, don't be afraid to submit something just because it's different from anything we have published before.)

Watch the length of what you submit. Suggested length is between 200 and 1,000 words. If you have a longer piece, consider dividing it into Part I and Part II.

Please e-mail your article to Assistant Editor Janet Burke at: Janet@proverbs31.org.

Please submit one article at a time.

If you use Scripture quotations, please indicate which Bible version used.

We reserve the right to edit all contributions for style, clarity and length.

Certify the originality of what you have written, and let us know if it has been published before.

Give us permission to use what you have written in the magazine and its promotion, as well as in other facets of our ministry, including radio programs and on our website.

Be patient. Each issue is produced a few months before it reaches your mailbox, and issues are taking shape many months before that.

Do you ever search your heart

Do you ever search your heart

Do you ever search your heart
as you watch the day depart?
Is there something way down deep you try to hide?
If this day should be the end
and eternity begin,
when the book is open wide,
would the Lord be satisfied?

Is He satisfied?
Is He satisfied?
Is He satisfied with me?
Have I done my best?
Have I stood the test?
Is He satisfied with me?

When my Lord shall come again,
when He walks and talks with men
What if every friend He had
were just like me?
Would He feel a welcome here?
Or would He go away in tears?
Am I all that I should be?
Is He satisfied with me?

Feeble is the lamp of fame
by which man inscribes his name,
On the wall of time
for other men to see
Though he boasts of
wealth and power,
none can help him in that hour
When the angels hear his plea
Is He satisfied with me?

Look up Matthew 25:31-46 for parable that Jesus told about this.

(Lyrics taken from a Sing Along book, published by the Scripture Union, probably around 1975)
