SALT & LIGHT

SALT & LIGHT

One of the best ways to learn more about a church is to know what they value or hold as important in their philosophy of ministry. The following acrostic will help you identify some of our ministry priorities at Salt and Light.

S - "Scriptural Authority"
God's Word is the foundation for all we say and do in the ministry of Salt & Light.

A - "Attitude of Acceptance"
Our Goal is to accept all people in the church and make them feel welcome.

L - "Living in Prayer, Faith, and the Holy Spirit
The church belongs to God, so we must rely on Him to guide us through prayer, faith and God's Spirit.

T - "Team"
We believe in a united effort to work together for the common purpose of brining people to Christ and helping them become devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

L - "Learning to Be Disciples"
Discipleship is not a purpose of the Church, it is THE purpose of the Church.

I - "Intentionally Relationship Centered"
The Church is people, so therefore the Church must be centered on relationships. At Salt and Light we value relationships in all we do.

G - " Gifts, Passion, Service"
The Church is most effective in ministry when people are serving with their spiritual gifts in their area of passion for ministry.

H - "Home Fellowships"
We believe the church must get larger and smaller at the same time. Our church is committed to the ministry of small groups.

T - "Timely Context"
At Salt and Light, we believe our mission is to present ministry in a way that relates to our cultural context.

Special Callings
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Monday, December 02 2013

"Nevertheless, each one should retain the place in life that the Lord assigned to him and to which God has called him." 1 Corinthians 7:17a - 1 Thessalonians 5:24
Each of us is called to relationship with God through Jesus Christ. We are called by Him, to Him, and for Him. Once we enter that relationship with Christ, we are called into the physical expression of that relationship. This is where our vocations are manifested as a result, not as an end in themselves.
Additionally, there are examples of special callings in the Bible in which individuals have a direct communication from God to do a specific task for Him. Moses, Paul, Peter, and many others had direct communication about what God was calling them to do. Not everyone receives this "special" calling. This is not to say God is not personal with each of us. Some have had extraordinary supernatural encounters with God that led to their calling being specific to a task ordered by God. All of us have been called to follow Christ and live our lives in obedience to Him. Many of us have a sense to go in one direction or another based on our life experiences and giftedness. This, too, is God's calling.
Calling goes beyond our work and includes our relationships to others: our spouse, our children, our neighbors -- and our co-workers. We must remember this in order that our "work calling" does not become elevated at the expense of the other important aspects of our lives. This is the holistic approach to the gospel in which God made all of life equally important.
Therefore, the next time someone says, "I was called into the ministry" or "I am in full-time Christian work," stop him or her and tell him or her we are all in full-time Christian work. There is no secular and religious in the economy of God. I have a dear friend who often says, "I am a servant of the living God masquerading as a dentist." So, too, are you first a servant of the living God.

Chariots of Fire

“Chariots of Fire” – The Movie, The Lyrics, The Music

It was great to see the opening of the Olympics 2012 this year, with plenty of swanky British creativity, and smart visuals going into the opening ceremony. The British have certainly pulled all the icons of British culture and tried to condense it. And that was the intention, where:
  • the stadium was envisioned to rise from the “ashes” of an old industrial site,
  • icons like Paul McCartney reminiscing about the days of the Beetles
  • actors like Rowan Atkinson playing the iconic antics of Mr. Bean
  • the theme song of “Chariots of Fire” being played.
  • The Queen and James Bond parachuting from a helicopter
  • and more …
Now, I tried to look for the lyrics to the song “Chariots of Fire” and found some interesting copyright issues. I had initially thought the music was from an old english hymn and especially since the movie “Chariots of Fire” had such strong themes about God and faith.
Apparently the theme music for the movie “Chariot of Fire” is just a tune with no lyrics, no words. Even though this tune has always been called “the song from Chariots of Fire” and without a doubt the movie made the tune popular, it has tried to dis-associate itself from the movie. This music has a name. It’s called “Vangelis”, and written by Greek composer  Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou. Thank you Evangelos.
Now, the only reason why this tune has some meaning to me is that its strongly associated in my mind to God and the Christian faith. It reminds me of a period of time when “Chariots of Fire” was sung in churches. Upon searching for the lyrics of that song, I found that they were apparently written by Pastor Jack Hayford in the 1980s. It is a great song, with great lyrics, and so Jack Hayford wrote to the copyright owners of “Vangelis” (the tune) to ask if the song/lyrics could be sung with the music. The answer was apparently “No”.
So what is left are 3 fragmented and excellent copyrighted pieces of work.
  1. The Movie “Chariots of Fire”
  2. The Song Lyrics “Chariot of Fire”
  3. The Music “Vangelis”
Each by itself (in my opinion) has diminished value. But when combined, its presents a strong and powerful message as intended by the creators of the movie “Chariots of Fire” and ultimately for its audience. Without the movie, the music means nothing. Without the lyrics/words the music means nothing.
So for those of you looking for the lyrics, they are attached below. Enjoy!
And for those of you who want to see the lyrics and the music united in song, please comment and petition on this post. Thanks!

Chariot of Fire
I rise up to worship,
I stand to acclaim,
The King of all Glory,
Christ Jesus, His name.
I ask you Lord Jesus,
Fulfill my desire;
Please light me and make me
A Chariot of Fire
Come ride on my life,
Lord Jesus Christ;
My King and my Master
Come ride on my life,
To this one thing
I wholly aspire.
Come rule in my heart,
Lord Jesus Christ;
My King and my Master
Come ride on my life
And I will be your Chariot of Fire.

BECOMING AN EFFECTIVE GLOBAL LEADER
by Maya Hu-Chan, Jeremy Solomons, and Carlos E. Marin

five key behavioral characteristics of effective and influential corporate global leaders.

These characteristics are as follows:
trustworthy, respectful and caring, balanced between “doing” and “being”, emotionally literate, and culturally self aware.

Trustworthy
Leaders are viewed as dependable, sincere, nondeceptive promise keepers.
They show integrity and moral fiber. In many countries, paying government
officials to get a project off the ground is part of doing business, but true global
leaders are those who would rather walk away from "a deal" than compromise
their own or their company's integrity. In this way, they earn high levels of
respect.

Respectful and Caring
Global leaders demonstrate a high regard for the dignity, worth, well-being, and
autonomy of all people, including themselves. They are genuinely interested in
learning from other cultures, and they are able to demonstrate cultural empathy
by consistently "seeing the picture" from various cultural points of view, including
his or her own. These leaders also show their desire to learn and "communicate"
in the local language.
Many negative examples of global leadership show up in managers who view
their assignments as "temporary". If the assignment is temporary, why should
they go to the trouble of communicating and becoming more acquainted with the
locals and their culture? Unfortunately, these leaders do not see their learning as
an investment in their global leadership skills.

Balanced between "Doing" and "Being"
A global leader has the sensitivity and skills to manage attitudes, values, and
expectations around issues of performance and results in the cultural context of
those he or she leads. For example, in Latin American and Middle Eastern
cultures, there is much more of a "being" than a "doing" orientation. In terms of
hiring or buying, who a person is and what sort of character he or she has may
be considered more important than technical competence.
The global leader works effectively to accomplish the goals of the organization,
while aware of this balance. The trust the leader inspires in others gives him or
her license to set the performance bar on both variables: "being" (quality of life)
and "doing" (business success).

Emotional Literacy
Emotional awareness, resilience, and persistence are important for global
leaders. Especially under difficult or stressful circumstances, these leaders are
aware of the source of their feelings and emotions. They are capable of sensing,
understanding, and responding effectively in situations that are emotionally
charged, and they can "witness" or view themselves on the cultural stage and
direct their responses from this vantage point.

Cultural Self-Aware
Global leaders demonstrate the ability to recognize, and then learn from, the
different behavioral expectations required of different roles, both in their own
culture and in the cultural context in which they are operating. They learn to
recognize and deal effectively with the different attitudes, values, and
expectations placed on cultural variables such as power, competitiveness, time,
space (physical proximity), individualism, performance, formality, and structure.
This information gives them knowledge required to establish meaningful and
effective relationships and to work successfully with people who operate from
different cultural orientations.
